Anmel: geological wonders & centennial argan trees
Just North of the city of Tafraoute, a major tourist destination 170km South of Agadir, the city of Anmel sits at the foot of the stunning Anti-Atlas mountain range. Anmel is home to the majestic "Lion's Head" geological formation, a popular tourist site and destination for hikers and climbers.
Anmel's strategic location allows it to act as a "gateway" to the Souss-Massa region, and one of the goals of the project is to encourage tourists and locals from the region to engage with all that Anmel has to offer. The second key goal is to provide leisure and pedagogical infrastructure to the local population. The challenge is to hit several birds with one stone.
The project consists of three sites, including:
1) The Lookout - This platform will allow visitors to have a panoramic view of the nearby mountains, introducing them to all there is to explore nearby. The proposal also includes a geology museum to provide information on the unique features of the region’s mountain ranges, as well as a parking, cafe and restrooms.
2) The Corniche - The development of a pedestrian corridor punctuated by play areas, shaded plazas, and viewing platforms facing the Lion’s Head, will create a space for those from near and far to walk, play, and rest. This already popular picnic spot among locals will become a place to gather and socialize, offering a leisure space / amenity for people from Anmel, Tafraoute, and beyond.
3) The Argan Tree Interpretation Center - As you leave Anmel, the third site will allow you a final space to stop, rest, and learn under one of the most magnificent trees in the city. The Argan Interpretation Center is an outdoors educational space focusing on the emblematic regional tree and the value of the species to the region’s environment and traditions.
